This tutorial will show you alternatives for editing a mockup without using Photoshop. First things first, a mockup is a digital image that allows you to place your product within it to make it look natural and in use. Nearly all shops that sell digital items or wall art use mockups to make those beautiful images that you see on display for their products.
I sell mockups on my website HERE and also in my Etsy shop HERE. All of my designs are Photoshop friendly but they also come in JPEG format so that they can be edited using any photo editing software. In this blog, I am going to show you how to edit a mockup without using Adobe Photoshop.
There are many different software programs out there but one of the most versatile and free ones is GoDaddy Studio. You can use it in your web browser on your computer or download the app on your phone (Apple or Android). While it does have some paid features, it’s free to download and use the basic features, which is all you need to edit a mockup. It also doesn’t compromise your image quality or place watermarks on your image like many other apps do on their free version. GoDaddy Studio is easy to use and today I’m going to show you how to use it to edit your mockup.
Using Your Web Browser
Go to the GoDaddy Studio site HERE and create an account (it’s free). Once logged in, click the upper right button that says “New project” and select “Image.” Find the mockup image from your computer and open it.

Once your mockup image is open, select “Upload Image” to now add your file you want to place within the mockup.
One thing to keep in mind, for mockups that have any kind of rings or shadows on the main object or don’t have straight edges on the main object you’ll be placing your image on (like the image below), you’ll need to make sure your design file background is transparent and make sure it’s saved in PNG format to preserve the transparent background. Alternatively, if your image has a white background, you may be able to move your image off of the problem areas (corners, rings, shadows) and it still look fine.

Now that you’ve placed your image on the mockup, you just need to resize the image to fit the mockup. You can do this by dragging the edges of the bounding box or corners.

Now that our image is placed into the mockup, we can now add text. Click the “Text” icon on the left side bar.

To change the font or color of your text, use the RIGHT sidebar options. The first option at the top labeled “text” is where you can change the font, text size, text alignment and curve. You’ll see below that I changed the font and the font size.

The second option on the sidebar is “Color.” You can change the color of your text by clicking the colored circle (usually it’s black or white to start).

The third option on the right sidebar is “Shadow.” Here we can add a shadow to your text. You can change the color of the shadow as well as the opacity. To change the placement of the shadow (and make it look larger), use the Angle X and Y box to change the numbers until you achieve the look you want. If you want the shadow to go left instead of right, change the X box to a negative number. To make the shadow go up instead of down, change the Y box to a negative number. You can also play with the blur option to see if you want any blur on your shadow.

There’s also additional features available with this program that you can play around with but these are the basics to get your mockup edited. Now we just need to save our file. To do this, click the “Export” dropdown at the top right. Now name your file, select your format (JPEG is the most common), and select BEST Quality (you always want the best quality photos!) Now click export and it’ll save it to your downloads folder.

On a side note, in case your layers get mixed up, you can click the layers tab at the top (beside the export dropdown) to see your different layers. You can also change the order of your layers here by dragging one above or below the other.

And that’s how you edit a mockup for free using the GoDaddy Studio website. There’s also a tutorial below on how to edit a mockup using the GoDaddy Studio app on your phone.
Using Your Phone
I’ve made a video tutorial to show you how to use your phone and the GoDaddy Studio app (free) to edit a mockup. Check it out below.
The GoDaddy Studio app is an easy to use app that is also versatile and lets you edit a mockup in just a few minutes.
